During her time at University of Oregon she majored in Advertising with a minor in art, where she discovered fiber arts. This experience sparked an interest in weaving leading to pursuing a degree in Textile Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. There, she developed her skills in screen printing, weaving and print design. Baines’s work explores the human experience of discomfort and unease through texture, material and imagery. Her recent work was at the digital weaving lab at Praxis Fiber Workshop focused on tapestries illustrating the complexities of post-concussion syndrome. Using texture, color and photo manipulation to show the viewer the altered perception and sensory disruptions after her third concussion. Rooted in snow gear, it pays homage to the DIY, underground spirit shared by both early snowboard culture and the origins of electronic music. First I transferred the prints onto cyanotype fabric and scanned into the computer. The images were then indexed down to 5 colors. It completely disrupted my life, and since then I have been dealing with chronic symptoms due to post concussion syndrome. I have had weeks long migraines, visual disturbances and been in an almost constant state of vertigo. I was quoted a year recovery and grateful to say I’m doing much better after months of rehabilitation.
